March Winds!!!!!!
Today is March 16th. Last math class today. LOVE the classes. First of all I am out of school and have no kids for a day. Secondly we have an awesome day learning new things to share with our students. Third, we have clean, stocked bathrooms and a wonderful lunch. I love math class. This month has been unreal. Started with three days of "snow days" with a boil water alert and no school. thought it was appropriate that we had no winter break but the water happened and gave us the break we have always had.
Last week we lost power on Wednesday at 11:30 am. Otto took the day off to get an oil change, go to the dentist and various other items. Thank God he was home! A tree fell on the wires and a live wire was in the neighbor's yard. When he went out the neighbor (who is limited English) was out there with a hose spraying the live wire and grass fires. A nearby shed burned from the wire and we were without power until Friday night about 10:00 pm. I have never lived with that cold. It was below freezing, wind chill was in the teens and we were lucky to have a fireplace with lots of wood. The neighbors generators were not quiet. Thursday I stayed home. It was so cold, by mid-day I went out (no hair dryer ) and got lunch, charged my phone and bought tea-lights to prepare for the night. Came home, picked up all the fallen wood in the yards, walked the dog (warmer than the house) and built a fire by 3:00. Could not sleep another night in a 47 degree bedroom with so many blankets I could not move in the bed and generators so loud, I could not sleep. Thursday night I slept on the couch,,,,,,(can't move or roll but much warmer with fire) dog jumped on my lap and tried to push ME off the couch and SNORED. Decide to go to work on Friday. Can't stay another day in this house. Freezing cold bedroom, shower and dark bathroom. By Thursday, we have a small borrowed generator from our neighbor to run a small space heater or a hair dryer. Come home Friday and 20 trucks with about 40 guys are trying to fix the lines. They worked over 4 hours in the freezing cold/windchill re-stringing the wires. I had put all of the freezer/fridge stuff in all our coolers on the patio. I found a bag of shrimp and some leftover lobster claws. Otto boiled a pot of water on the grill and we ate like royals while the workers hung off those poles. Even melted butter and made a sauce. They left about 9:00 and I wanted to sob. No power. Still no power. About 10:00 I heard a "beep beep" and realized the power had returned. Since it was early in the day when it went out, no lights came on and many of the circuit breakers had tripped. I know it was only 3 days but what a happy end to the power outage and a great beginning to the weekend!!!!!!!After checking a set of tests by candle light and living by fireplace, I was tired of pretending I lived in greenfield Village. It is what it is. What a March it has been!
