42nd Wedding Anniversary
42 years ago today; Sunday, August 13, 1972, I said "I do". After many ups and downs, I would not have had it any other way. So much has happened. I ended up a city girl, with three great kids that have, in my opinion, made great choices in partners and in life. They live in 3 of the countries top cities, making travel to visit them fun. I have a job that has been a career, teaching what I love (in addition to writing), and a husband that has been a good choice for a life partner. (Most of the time...LOL). And, don't forget, a dog that makes daily life interesting.
Today, visiting Boston (in the rain) we are together celebrating. We are past the going-out to a night club life (guess we were never really there!). Most of the time we just enjoy each other's company and sharing the daily hum-drum activities.
Every year we try and spend this day together. Last year we were in Frankenmuth, Michigan, two years ago, Chicago, then South Haven. We have done Anniversary trips to Mackinac Island, taking Andrew back to school at Michigan Tech, Canada, Detroit river cruise, Put-In-Bay Ohio, and I have forgotten!! Next year we would love to rent a house for a week and have all the kids join us on the Atlantic coast. Just like the Kennedys. Ha!!!! And....there will be a new addition, due in a couple of weeks.
Soon, sadly, summer will end. All of the travels and excitement of travel will be over and it will be back to school and routine. I am excited to be teaching 7th and 8th grade math, this year, a little more experienced with the 8th. Also adding my reading & writing class again. Challenging to say the least.
I have a few more years until I can retire. Not sure what I want to do but I hope to be able to continue writing, maybe a newspaper column, walk Lucy, travel and work in a day or two of tutoring, maybe a guide at Greenfield Village and a day a week at Pier I. That should keep me busy.
Today is not like 42 years ago. It is rainy and in the 60's. 1972 was sunny and HOT. We were married in a little church in the little town I grew up in. About 200 people came and my parents gave us a farm reception with booze, ham and potato salad. I remember we had cake and punch at the church and most came out for dinner at the farm....outdoors. We left early evening for Metro Airport in Detroit, stayed the night at the airport hotel and flew to New York in the morning and on to Europe for 2 weeks in Germany, Austria, Hungary (not a fun part of the trip), Paris (best part) and London. Whirlwind! It was my first time on a 747. Some day I will write about that trip. It is what it is and today is pretty damn good!
